Underwater mining: a growing dilemma

Our growing need to increase supplies of critical minerals is one such example: rare metals that are essential to many of the key technologies that will allow us to achieve a truly sustainable future. As I discussed in my previous article on this topic, current supplies of critical minerals are insufficient to support the rapid transition to net-zero emissions envisioned by the Paris Agreement goals and confirmed at COP26. For example, lithium and cobalt from existing mines and projects under construction are expected to produce only about half of our needs by 2030. Similarly, we will not be able to meet 20% of our projected copper demand. Meanwhile, materials such as battery-grade nickel and key rare earth elements such as neodymium and dysprosium are also likely to come under pressure in the coming years. We need to find new sources of these minerals, and find them quickly. This is not a contradiction.

The problem is that one of the greatest potential sources of critical minerals is right before our eyes: Earth’s life-giving oceans. But I believe that we cannot, and should not, exploit this resource predatorily for the sake of short-term convenience. Our oceans are natural resource banks, specifically, of the kinds of minerals needed to sustain new green technologies. Many are ready to support deep-sea mining investments to extract these resources. But our oceans are one of the planet’s largest natural resources, and are largely defenseless to commercial exploitation. If we’re not careful, we could find ourselves trying to save the planet by destroying one of its most precious environments.
